I’m going to give you my honest opinion of Rootz protein. I’ve tried a lot of different protein powders, supplements, and shakes in the past. A lot. I love to use a collagen/bone broth protein powder like Vital Proteins in my high fat coffees and for a non-flavored protein boost in some smoothies from time to time. However, since I get asked so often about what good quality proteins I recommend, here is my Rootz protein review.

I used to live off of protein shakes. I would religiously drink one a day. Things have changed since those days, and now I only drink shakes and smoothies from time to time. My two daughters like them also, so it’s a great way to sneak some healthy antioxidants, superfoods and veggies into something super tasty as we’re working on developing healthy habits with them. Just remember, smoothies and shakes shouldn’t always be “hiding” the nutritious items, we want kids to know what healthy foods actually taste like and get to a point where they like and choose those healthy items. For more on healthy eating with kids, visit my Healthy Children articles on the blog.

So, what protein powder have I been using lately? Again, sometimes I like to use a collagen or bone broth protein, but if I want some flavor and something sweet, currently I’m diggin’ my Rootz Superfood Protein. PS. Why Rootz?

Rootz Superfood Protein is made with a clean protein source coming from egg white protein, hemp protein and sacha inchi. Sacha Inchi and Hemp seeds are great superfood sources of protein containing all amino acids, making it a “complete protein.” It’s rare to find this in a non-whey protein powder. But hemp is one of my favorites, and we actually use Sacha Inchi seeds in my house in things like trail mix, it’s a great superfood protein source!

I also love the health benefits of many of the other superfood and greens ingredients! Just look at this clean ingredient list!

Ingredients:

  • Protein: Egg White Protein, Sacha Inchi Protein, Hemp Protein
  • Electrolytes: Coconut, Banana
  • Superfoods: Chia Seeds, Flax Seeds, Maca Root, Bee Pollen, Acai, Goji Berries, Blueberries, Royal Jelly
  • Greens: Spirulina, Chlorella, Kale, Spinach, Broccoli
  • Other Ingredients Natural Chocolate Extract, Natural Vanilla Extract, Stevia Leaf, Cinnamon, Natural Sea Salt

Alright, so how does it taste?

Actually, SO good!! I’ve had it a few ways, as I’ll describe below. And it’s really very versatile. I was worried about a “chocolate banana” flavor because honestly, that combo gets old quickly. But what I found was it can either be really chocolaty if you want it to be by adding things like cacao, or making it into chocolate pancakes… but it also tastes vanilla-like when I blended it with vanilla almond milk and a few drops of vanilla stevia. So it was great both ways! The “banana” is so mild I wouldn’t even say it tastes like banana at all. It is not chalky like many other protein powders out there, either. It is very smooth and can also be used for baking and making non-smoothie items where you want a boost of superfoods or protein!

I’ve used it a few ways so far:

Smoothie bowls for myself & my kids: I blended Rootz with full fat coconut milk, vanilla Califa Farms almond milk, spinach, hemp seeds, chia seeds and ice. Topped with Probiotic Yogurt from Purely Elizabeth and some more chia seeds.

Smoothies for myself and my kids: I blend ice, almond milk, frozen bananas, blueberries, and spinach/kale. Add a few drops of vanilla stevia if you don’t find it sweet enough. Sometimes I add some MCT oil, frozen avocado, or full fat coconut milk to add some healthy fats as well!

Chocolate cookies: Using the Chocolate Protein Cookie recipe from the Rootz website, my girls loved it! Ingredients included: 1/3 cup nut butter, applesauce, eggs, Rootz Protein, coconut sugar, sea salt, vanilla, baking soda, ACV, cacao, chocolate chips. Super easy to make, too! [Recipe on website]
